Renault has unveiled an electric concept version of the classic 1964 Renault 8 Gordini with 270 hp, reimagining the legendary rally car with modern electric powertrain technology. The concept merges heritage styling with contemporary suspension, aerodynamic wings, and contemporary design cues while maintaining the iconic silhouette.
Renault unveiled an electric concept version of the Renault 8 Gordini on 26 September 2026, reviving the legendary rally machine that debuted in 1964 with a rear-mounted 95 hp four-cylinder engine. The original earned recognition as a training car for motorsports talent, notably French rally champion Jean Ragnotti.
The contemporary reimagining retains the original's symmetrical proportions and iconic styling while incorporating a 270 hp electric powertrain paired with modern suspension geometry. The concept rides on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels fitted within pronounced fenders designed to accentuate visual momentum. According to Alexandre Malval, VP Design at Renault, the design team generated more than 300 sketches throughout the development process, with two principal directions advanced before synthesising elements into a unified visual language.
Attention extended to material and finish details, including a bespoke paint formulation inspired by Bleu de France, the signature hue of the original Gordini. The modern blue employs a three-layer construction combining mother-of-pearl pigment with a blue-tinted binder to create depth that reveals the historic colour tone along sculptural body lines under varying light conditions.
Interior design emphasises rally heritage through purposeful sporting details that underscore the concept's performance intent. The 8 Gordini concept demonstrates Renault's sustained commitment to electrifying automotive icons through contemporary engineering while preserving their competitive lineage.
