Rivian Launches Unified RivianOS 2 Across R1 and R2 Models
Rivian began deploying RivianOS 2 on 4 September 2026, marking the largest software overhaul since the original R1 launched. Version 2026.31 unifies all company vehicles on a single software platform for the first time, introducing a redesigned interface and advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
The new operating system consolidates all R1 and R2 generations onto a unified software foundation after previously operating on diverging systems. This consolidation acknowledges differences in computing capability, with R2 and second-generation R1 models using Unreal Engine 5 for real-time 3D vehicle and environmental visualizations, while first-generation R1s remain on Unreal Engine 4 to maintain screen responsiveness on legacy hardware.
Key updates include a redesigned user interface with repositionable quick controls and a rebuilt settings menu constructed from scratch. Rivian added Real-Time Route Alerts integrating police presence and speed-camera warnings into Google Maps navigation, sourcing data from local authorities, third-party providers, and community contributions.
The voice assistant "Hey Rivian" now benefits from an expanded artificial intelligence layer called Unified Intelligence. R2 and second-generation models employ hybrid edge computing for low-latency onboard processing, while all generations gain expanded cloud-assisted voice functionality.
Connect+ subscription features priced at $14.99 monthly or $149.99 annually include a dedicated weather application with real-time conditions, air quality information, and 10-day forecasts, plus Mobile Live Trips allowing users to manage active navigation from the Rivian smartphone application. Owners gained increased privacy controls including hotword customization, location-sharing limitations, and adjustments to driver-profile data retention settings.
