The Federal Aviation Administration has imposed a temporary flight restriction over SpaceX's McGregor, Texas facility from September 18 to October 2, coinciding with Tesla's planned Roadster reveal event on October 1. The restriction covers a 1.5-nautical-mile radius and extends from ground level to 10,000 feet altitude.
The FAA issued Temporary Flight Restriction notice NOTAM FDC 6/3825, prohibiting aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles from entering the designated zone. The agency cited "hazards" under federal regulations 14 CFR 91.137(a)(3) as justification. Tesla's Waco venue sits approximately 20 minutes from the McGregor facility, reinforcing the connection between the flight restriction timing and the reveal location.
The 10,000-foot altitude ceiling stands out as unusual. Previous temporary flight restrictions at McGregor for engine static fires and component tests typically capped at around 2,000 feet, indicating operations confined to ground level. This significantly elevated ceiling suggests activities exceeding standard stationary testing procedures.
Elon Musk has previously promoted a "SpaceX Package" for the new Roadster, featuring cold-gas thrusters capable of achieving zero-to-60 mph acceleration in under one second, and potentially enabling brief lift-off. Earlier 2026 reports indicated Tesla planned a remote-controlled demonstration at McGregor with an unoccupied vehicle, with spectators positioned hundreds of yards away due to noise concerns.
Tesla has not formally confirmed any flight demonstration. The company has used only the phrase "Go for launch" and released an image of the vehicle positioned on what appears to be a launch pad. Nonetheless, establishing airspace restrictions at this altitude and timing strongly suggests the event will involve more than a static vehicle presentation.
