Volkswagen Unveils Mission Efficiency: Record-Breaking EV Achieves 1,278 km on Single Charge

Volkswagen unveiled the Mission Efficiency concept as the world's most efficient near-production electric vehicle. The design utilizes the MEB+ platform and components shared with the ID. Polo, undergoing meticulous optimization to minimize energy consumption across every system.

The vehicle secured three officially verified world records from Record Institute Germany in the near-production four-seater EV category: aerodynamic coefficient of 0.158, ideal consumption of 6.48 kWh/100 km, and real-world efficiency of 6.89 kWh/100 km excluding charging losses. Above 80 km/h, the vehicle consumes over 30% less energy than a standard ID. Polo.

The design employs a teardrop silhouette with fully clad rear wheels, completely enclosed underbody, and active cooling flaps. Notable features include an electromechanical rear brake eliminating hydraulic fluid, a 370 W solar system integrated into roof and boot lid capable of adding up to 30 km daily range, and patented rim deflectors reducing wheel turbulence. Despite efficiency prioritization, the vehicle accommodates 481 liters of cargo space with practical interior design and an aluminum structure reinforced with carbon-fiber and aramid materials.

Volkswagen acknowledged the connection to the 2013 XL1, which previously held the production-car efficiency record with 0.189 Cd. Mission Efficiency surpasses that earlier achievement. VW brand CEO Thomas Schäfer stated: "Mission Efficiency is the ideal way to demonstrate what distinguishes Volkswagen in the electric age: technology for the masses—not just for the few."
